Two dwellings enveloping a central courtyard
The client's brief outlined a project for two houses on the same site, each with a three-car garage. The larger house needed to accommodate four bedrooms for the clients and their grown children, and the second house required two to three bedrooms and became affectionately referred to as the "dinghy". The Lovell Health House by Richard Neutra served as a design precedent.
The two volumes are arranged around a central basalt cobblestone piazza, allowing for the comfortable manoeuvring of vehicles and unifying the arrangement of the two dwellings. In between, constructed with pre-cast concrete, the ʻfinsʼ serve to lead the visitor into the entry of the main house, and the horizontal banding between light and dark that binds the two dwellings diminishes the bulk of the larger dwelling. Inside the house, the architectural arrangement of space and controlled palette provides a backdrop and counterpoint for the ownerʼs flamboyant taste.
