Clay Block House

Clay Block House

A green family home within Kohimarama

The clients’ brief was to create a nurturing and resilient home for their young family with thermal performance as a central focus. Early in the design process they showed a strong interest in Ziegel blocks. These blocks contain internal air pockets that form an integrated structural and insulated system whilst being a low-carbon production material. Choosing this system improved building efficiency and avoided the usual space and time lost that comes with insulating against traditional concrete block walls.

The design of the home encourages natural cross-ventilation through thoughtful window placement. Triple-glazed units strengthen the overall thermal performance, while louvres on the western façade help manage the harsh afternoon sun. For all home heating requirements, a Stiebel-Eltron low-energy boiler was used to keep energy expenditure to a minimum.

With an existing stream to the eastern side of the site, the clients' and practice acknowledged this was a key area to protect. To regenerate and promote its preservation would be the approach taken. The clients' vision of regeneration resulted in planting over 300 natives in this area, helping promote stability to the surrounding ecosystem.

With young children, the clients' were focused on creating a comfortable and healthy home to support their family as it grows. They were drawn to low VOC materials that offer strong performance along with a warm and natural appearance. The challenge was to integrate these emerging systems into a design that still feels homely and suited to the Auckland coastal suburban setting.
